Jesus Is Our Eternal High Priest
Hebrews 4:14–16; Hebrews 7:23–28
Overview
Hebrews 4:14–16 and Hebrews 7:23–28 reveal that Jesus Christ is our eternal High Priest under the New Covenant. Unlike the Levitical priests who served temporarily and were replaced because of death, Jesus holds His priesthood forever. Having offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin, He now ministers continually in the presence of the Father on behalf of His people. Because of His finished work and ongoing intercession, every disciple has confident access to God and complete assurance of salvation.
Understanding These Chapter
Under the Old Covenant, the high priest represented the people before God by offering repeated animal sacrifices for sins. His ministry was temporary because he eventually died and another priest had to take his place. These priests could never provide permanent forgiveness because their sacrifices could not remove sin.
Jesus fulfilled everything the Old Covenant priesthood foreshadowed. He became both the perfect High Priest and the perfect sacrifice. Because He lives forever, His priesthood never ends, and His ministry on behalf of His people is eternal.
📖 Hebrews 4:14–16
Jesus Understands and Helps His People
14 Since we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
🔹 The Truth
Jesus Christ is the great High Priest who has entered heaven itself into the presence of the Father. Because He became fully human, He understands every weakness, temptation, sorrow, and trial His people experience. Yet He remained completely without sin, making Him the perfect representative before God.
🔹 The Promise
God promises that every disciple may approach His throne with confidence through Jesus Christ. Instead of fear and condemnation, believers receive mercy, grace, forgiveness, strength, and help whenever they come to Him.
✅ The Conclusion
Because Jesus is our sinless and compassionate High Priest, we never approach God alone. We come confidently through Christ, knowing that He welcomes us and provides everything we need.
📖 Hebrews 7:23–25
Jesus Holds an Eternal Priesthood
23 The former priests were many because death prevented them from continuing in office. 24 But because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.
🔹 The Truth
The Levitical priesthood was temporary because every priest eventually died. Jesus, however, rose from the dead and lives forever. His priesthood never ends, and His ministry never needs a successor. He continually intercedes before the Father for those who belong to Him.
🔹 The Promise
God promises complete and eternal salvation to everyone who comes to Him through Jesus Christ. Because Christ continually intercedes for His people, their salvation rests upon His eternal ministry rather than their own strength.
✅ The Conclusion
Jesus is the only eternal High Priest. His continual intercession assures every disciple that their salvation is secure because it depends upon His unchanging life and ministry.
📖 Hebrews 7:26–28
Jesus Offered the Perfect Sacrifice Once for All
26 Such a High Priest was fitting for us—holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, He has no need to offer sacrifices daily, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because He did this once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 The Law appoints men who have weakness as high priests, but God's oath appoints the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
🔹 The Truth
Jesus is completely holy, sinless, and perfect. Unlike every Old Covenant priest, He never needed to offer sacrifices for His own sins because He had none. His single sacrifice on the cross completely satisfied God's justice forever.
🔹 The Promise
God promises that Christ's sacrifice never needs to be repeated. Every disciple who trusts in Him receives complete forgiveness because His sacrifice is eternally sufficient.
✅ The Conclusion
Jesus is both the perfect High Priest and the perfect sacrifice. His once-for-all offering accomplished eternal redemption and fulfilled everything the Old Covenant priesthood anticipated.
