Chapter Analysis
James 4: Humble Yourselves Before God And Resist The World
Wars, Desires, And Friendship With The World
📖 James 4:1–5
¹ James asks where fights and quarrels among them come from. They come from sinful desires that battle within their members. ² They desire and do not have, so they murder. They covet and cannot obtain, so they fight and quarrel. They do not have because they do not ask. ³ When they do ask, they do not receive because they ask wrongly, wanting to spend it on their own pleasures. ⁴ Adulterous people, do they not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. ⁵ Scripture does not speak in vain when it says that the Spirit who dwells in believers yearns with jealousy.
🔹 The Truth
Quarreling often comes from sinful desires within the heart.
Selfish desire can lead to conflict, envy, and even hatred.
Believers may lack because they do not ask God.
Prayer can be wrong when it is driven by selfish pleasure.
Friendship with the world is hostility toward God.
God is jealous for the devotion of His people.
🔹 The Promise
God calls His people away from worldly desire and back to wholehearted devotion to Him.
✅ Conclusion
James shows that outward conflict begins with inward desire. When the heart is ruled by selfish cravings and worldly friendship, peace with God and peace with others are broken.
God Gives More Grace To The Humble
📖 James 4:6–10
⁶ But God gives more grace. Therefore, Scripture says that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁷ Therefore, believers are to submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from them. ⁸ They are to draw near to God, and He will draw near to them. Sinners must cleanse their hands, and the double-minded must purify their hearts. ⁹ They are to mourn, grieve, and weep; their laughter should be turned to mourning and their joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ They are to humble themselves before the Lord, and He will lift them up.
🔹 The Truth
God gives more grace.
God resists the proud.
God gives grace to the humble.
Believers must submit to God.
The devil must be resisted.
Believers must draw near to God.
Sin requires cleansing and repentance.
Double-minded hearts must be purified.
Humility before the Lord comes before being lifted up by Him.

Do Not Speak Evil Of One Another
📖 James 4:11–12
¹¹ Brethren must not speak evil against one another. The one who speaks against a brother and judges his brother speaks against the law and judges the law. But if someone judges the law, he is not a doer of the law, but a judge. ¹² There is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?
🔹 The Truth
Believers must not speak evil of one another.
Slander against a brother is serious before God.
A person who wrongly judges others acts as though he is above God’s law.
Believers are called to obey God’s word, not sit in judgment over it.
There is only one Lawgiver.
God alone is able to save and destroy.
🔹 The Promise
God is the righteous Lawgiver who alone has authority to save and to judge.
✅ Conclusion
James warns believers against sinful speech and proud judgment. God alone is Judge, and His people must walk in humility toward one another.
Do Not Boast About Tomorrow
📖 James 4:13–17
¹³ James speaks to those who say that today or tomorrow they will go to a certain city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit. ¹⁴ Yet they do not know what will happen tomorrow. Their life is like a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. ¹⁵ Instead, they should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” ¹⁶ But now they boast in their arrogance, and all such boasting is evil. ¹⁷ Therefore, the one who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
🔹 The Truth
Human plans are uncertain.
No one knows what tomorrow will bring.
Life is brief, like a vapor.
Believers should submit their plans to the will of the Lord.
Arrogant boasting about the future is evil.
Knowing what is right and refusing to do it is sin.
🔹 The Promise
The Lord rules over life, time, plans, and tomorrow.
✅ Conclusion
James does not forbid planning. He forbids arrogant planning that leaves God out. Believers are to live humbly, knowing that every day and every plan depends on the Lord’s will.
