Chapter Analysis
1 Corinthians 14: Pursue Love And Build Up The Church
Desire Spiritual Gifts, Especially Prophecy
📖 1 Corinthians 14:1–5
¹ Believers are to pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that they may prophesy. ² The one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, because no one understands him, and in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. ³ But the one who prophesies speaks to people for building up, encouragement, and comfort. ⁴ The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. ⁵ Paul wished they all spoke with tongues, but even more that they prophesied. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks with tongues, unless the tongue is interpreted, so the church may be built up.
🔹 The Truth
Love must govern the use of spiritual gifts.
Spiritual gifts should be desired for the good of others, not for personal display.
Prophecy builds up, encourages, and comforts the church.
Tongues without interpretation do not build up the gathered church.
The goal is that the church may be strengthened.
🔹 The Promise
God gives gifts to build up His people in truth, encouragement, and comfort.
✅ Conclusion
Paul begins by connecting spiritual gifts to love. The best use of a gift is not what seems most impressive, but what builds up the church.
Understanding Matters In The Church
📖 1 Corinthians 14:6–12
⁶ If Paul came speaking in tongues, what would he profit them unless he spoke with revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or teaching? ⁷ Even lifeless instruments, like a flute or harp, must give distinct sounds, or no one will know what is being played. ⁸ If a trumpet gives an unclear sound, who will prepare for battle? ⁹ In the same way, if believers speak words that are not understandable, how will anyone know what is said? They will be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ There are many kinds of languages in the world, and none is without meaning. ¹¹ But if someone does not know the meaning of the language, he will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker a foreigner to him. ¹² Since the Corinthians were eager for spiritual gifts, they should seek to excel in gifts that build up the church.
🔹 The Truth
Speech in the church must be understandable to be profitable.
Revelation, knowledge, prophecy, and teaching build up when they are understood.
Unclear sounds do not help people respond rightly.
Languages have meaning, but only if understood by the hearer.
Believers should seek what builds up the church.
🔹 The Promise
God uses understandable truth to strengthen His people.
✅ Conclusion
Paul teaches that clarity matters. In the gathered church, words should communicate truth in a way that people can understand and be helped by.
Pray And Sing With Understanding
📖 1 Corinthians 14:13–19
¹³ Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. ¹⁴ If Paul prayed in a tongue, his spirit prayed, but his understanding was unfruitful. ¹⁵ What then should be done? He would pray with the spirit, and he would also pray with understanding. He would sing with the spirit, and he would also sing with understanding. ¹⁶ If someone blesses God with the spirit but others do not understand, how can the uninformed person say “Amen” to the thanksgiving, since he does not know what was said? ¹⁷ The thanksgiving may be good, but the other person is not built up. ¹⁸ Paul thanked God that he spoke with tongues more than all of them. ¹⁹ Yet in the church, he would rather speak five words with understanding, so he could teach others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
🔹 The Truth
Tongues in the church require interpretation.
Prayer and singing should include understanding.
Others cannot agree with what they do not understand.
A person may give thanks sincerely, yet still fail to build up others.
Teaching others with understandable words is better in the church than many words no one understands.
🔹 The Promise
God builds His people through understandable prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and teaching.
✅ Conclusion
Paul does not reject tongues, but he puts them in proper order. In the church, understanding is necessary because the goal is not personal experience, but the building up of others.
Tongues As A Sign, Prophecy For Edification
📖 1 Corinthians 14:20–25
²⁰ Believers should not be children in their thinking. They should be infants in evil, but mature in understanding. ²¹ In the law it is written that God would speak to this people through men of other tongues and foreign lips, yet even then they would not hear Him. ²² Therefore, tongues are a sign, not mainly for believers, but for unbelievers; prophecy is not mainly for unbelievers, but for believers. ²³ If the whole church gathers together and everyone speaks in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers come in, will they not say the believers are out of their minds? ²⁴ But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted by all and called to account by all. ²⁵ The secrets of his heart are revealed, and he may fall on his face, worship God, and declare that God is truly among them.
🔹 The Truth
Believers should be mature in understanding.
God’s word must shape how gifts are understood and practiced.
Tongues can function as a sign, especially in relation to unbelief.
Confusion in the gathering can cause outsiders to think wrongly.
Clear prophetic truth can convict the heart and reveal God’s presence among His people.
🔹 The Promise
God can use His truth in the church to expose hearts and lead people to worship Him.
✅ Conclusion
Paul calls believers to maturity. The gathering of the church should not create confusion, but should display God’s truth in a way that can convict, reveal, and lead people to acknowledge His presence.
Let All Things Be Done For Edification
📖 1 Corinthians 14:26–33
²⁶ When believers come together, each one may have a psalm, a teaching, a tongue, a revelation, or an interpretation. Everything must be done for building up. ²⁷ If anyone speaks in a tongue, only two or at most three should speak, each in turn, and someone must interpret. ²⁸ But if there is no interpreter, the speaker should remain silent in the church and speak to himself and to God. ²⁹ Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should judge what is said. ³⁰ If a revelation is made to another who is sitting by, the first should be silent. ³¹ They may all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged. ³² The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. ³³ God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
🔹 The Truth
Everything in the church gathering must be done for edification.
Tongues must be limited, orderly, and interpreted.
Without interpretation, the tongue-speaker should remain silent in the church.
Prophecy must be weighed and judged.
God’s Spirit does not produce uncontrolled disorder.
God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.
🔹 The Promise
God gives order and peace among His people when gifts are used according to His instruction.
✅ Conclusion
The gathered church is not to be chaotic. Spiritual gifts are to be used in an orderly way so that believers learn, are encouraged, and are built up.
Order In The Churches
📖 1 Corinthians 14:34–40
³⁴ The women are to keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but are to be submissive, as the law also says. ³⁵ If they desire to learn something, they should ask their own husbands at home, because it is shameful for women to speak in the church. ³⁶ Paul asks whether the word of God came from them, or whether it came to them alone. ³⁷ If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, he should recognize that the things Paul writes are the commandments of the Lord. ³⁸ But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. ³⁹ Therefore, brethren should earnestly desire to prophesy, and they should not forbid speaking with tongues. ⁴⁰ Let all things be done decently and in order.
🔹 The Truth
God’s order is to be honored in the churches.
Paul’s instruction carries the authority of the Lord’s command.
Spiritual people must recognize and submit to apostolic teaching.
Prophecy should be desired.
Speaking with tongues should not be forbidden when practiced according to God’s order.
All things must be done decently and in order.
🔹 The Promise
God gives clear instruction so His church may gather in peace, order, and edification.
✅ Conclusion
Paul closes the chapter by bringing everything under the authority of the Lord. Gifts are not to be despised or forbidden when rightly used, but everything in the church must be done decently and in order.
Overall Conclusion
1 Corinthians 14 teaches that spiritual gifts must be governed by love, understanding, edification, and order.
Paul especially emphasizes prophecy because it builds up, encourages, comforts, teaches, and convicts through understandable truth. Tongues are not forbidden, but in the gathered church they must be interpreted and practiced in order.
The chapter shows that God does not want confusion among His people. The church gathering should strengthen believers, bear witness to outsiders, and reflect the peace and order of God.
The final command summarizes the whole chapter: all things must be done decently and in order.
