Chapter Analysis
1 Corinthians 3: God’s Field, God’s Building, And Christ The Foundation
Spiritual Immaturity And Division
📖 1 Corinthians 3:1–4
¹ Paul could not speak to the Corinthians as spiritual people, but as people controlled by the flesh, as infants in Christ. ² He fed them with milk and not solid food, because they were not yet able to receive it. Even now they were still not able, ³ because jealousy, strife, and divisions were among them. This showed that they were still walking according to the flesh and acting like ordinary men. ⁴ When one said, “I am of Paul,” and another said, “I am of Apollos,” they were showing fleshly thinking.
🔹 The Truth
Spiritual immaturity shows itself in jealousy, strife, and division.
Believers can be in Christ and still act in fleshly ways.
Dividing around human leaders reveals a wrong understanding of the body of Christ.
Spiritual growth requires moving beyond infancy into maturity.
🔹 The Promise
God’s people can grow beyond fleshly division as they learn to see Christ as the center.
✅ Conclusion
Paul rebukes the Corinthians because their divisions showed spiritual immaturity. They were acting as though human servants were the center, instead of Christ.
Servants Through Whom You Believed
📖 1 Corinthians 3:5–9
⁵ Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos? They are servants through whom the Corinthians believed, as the Lord gave to each one. ⁶ Paul planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. ⁷ So then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything in himself, but God who gives the growth. ⁸ The one who plants and the one who waters are united in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. ⁹ For believers who serve are God’s fellow workers, and the Corinthians are God’s field and God’s building.
🔹 The Truth
Human servants are not the source of spiritual life.
One servant may plant and another may water, but God gives the growth.
God’s workers are united in His purpose, not competitors for glory.
Each servant will receive reward according to his own labor.
The church belongs to God.
🔹 The Promise
God gives growth to His work and rewards faithful labor.
✅ Conclusion
Paul corrects their view of ministry. Servants matter, but they are only servants. God alone gives life, growth, and lasting fruit.
Christ Is The Only Foundation
📖 1 Corinthians 3:10–15
¹⁰ According to the grace of God given to him, Paul laid a foundation like a wise master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds. ¹¹ No one can lay any other foundation than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. ¹² If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, ¹³ each person’s work will become clear. The Day will reveal it, because it will be tested by fire, and the fire will show what kind of work each one has done. ¹⁴ If anyone’s work remains, he will receive a reward. ¹⁵ If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, yet as through fire.
🔹 The Truth
Jesus Christ is the only true foundation.
Those who build must be careful how they build.
All ministry and service will be tested by God.
Some work will remain and be rewarded.
Some work will be burned up, though the person himself may still be saved.
🔹 The Promise
God will reward faithful work that is built on Christ and endures His testing.
✅ Conclusion
The foundation is not Paul, Apollos, or any human leader. The foundation is Jesus Christ. Every believer’s work must be built on Him and will one day be tested by God.
You Are God’s Temple
📖 1 Corinthians 3:16–17
¹⁶ The Corinthians needed to know that they were God’s temple and that the Spirit of God dwelt among them. ¹⁷ If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him, because God’s temple is holy, and believers are that temple.
🔹 The Truth
The church is God’s temple.
The Spirit of God dwells among His people.
God’s temple is holy.
Dividing, damaging, or destroying the church is a serious matter before God.
🔹 The Promise
God dwells among His people by His Spirit.
✅ Conclusion
Paul reminds the Corinthians that the church is not a human club or party group. It is God’s holy temple, and God takes seriously how His people are treated.
Do Not Boast In Men
📖 1 Corinthians 3:18–23
¹⁸ No one should deceive himself. If anyone among them thinks he is wise in this age, he must become foolish so that he may become truly wise. ¹⁹ The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Scripture says that God catches the wise in their craftiness. ²⁰ Again, the Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are empty. ²¹ Therefore, no one should boast in men. All things belong to believers: ²² Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, things present, and things to come. All are theirs, ²³ and they belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
🔹 The Truth
Worldly wisdom is foolishness before God.
Human pride deceives the heart.
Believers must not boast in men.
God has given His people all they need in Christ.
Believers belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
🔹 The Promise
Those who belong to Christ are richly supplied in Him and need not boast in human leaders.
✅ Conclusion
The Corinthians were acting poor by clinging to human leaders as party names. Paul reminds them that all things are theirs in Christ. Therefore, they must not boast in men, but belong fully to Christ.
Overall Conclusion
1 Corinthians 3 shows that division in the church is a sign of spiritual immaturity.
Paul corrects the Corinthians by showing that human leaders are only servants. One plants, another waters, but God gives the growth. The church is God’s field and God’s building.
Jesus Christ is the only foundation. Every believer must be careful how he builds, because each person’s work will be tested. The church is also God’s temple, where the Spirit dwells, and God takes seriously anyone who damages His people.
The chapter ends with a warning against boasting in men. Believers belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
