Chapter Analysis
1 Thessalonians 4: Walk To Please God And Comfort One Another With Christ’s Coming
Walk To Please God
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:1–2
¹ Paul urges the believers in the Lord Jesus to continue walking in the way they had been taught, so they would please God more and more. ² They already knew the instructions Paul had given them through the Lord Jesus.
🔹 The Truth
Believers are called to walk in a way that pleases God.
The Christian life is a life of continued growth.
Paul’s instructions were given through the authority of the Lord Jesus.
Pleasing God should matter more than pleasing ourselves.
🔹 The Promise
God teaches His people how to walk in a way that pleases Him.
✅ Conclusion
Paul begins by calling believers to grow in obedience. They had already received instruction, but they were to continue increasing in a life that pleases God.
God’s Will Is Your Sanctification
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:3–8
³ God’s will for believers is their sanctification, that they stay away from sexual immorality. ⁴ Each one must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, ⁵ not in sinful passion like those who do not know God. ⁶ No one should wrong or take advantage of a brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such things, just as Paul had warned them before. ⁷ God did not call believers to uncleanness, but to holiness. ⁸ Therefore, the one who rejects this instruction does not reject man, but God, who gives His Holy Spirit to His people.
🔹 The Truth
God’s will for believers includes sanctification.
Believers must turn away from sexual immorality.
The body is to be controlled in holiness and honor.
Those who know God must not live like those who do not know Him.
Sexual sin can wrong and take advantage of others.
God calls His people to holiness, not uncleanness.
Rejecting God’s instruction is rejecting God Himself.
🔹 The Promise
God gives His Holy Spirit to His people so they may walk in holiness.
✅ Conclusion
Paul speaks plainly about holiness. God’s will is not unclear. Believers are called to turn from immorality and live in holiness before the God who gives them His Holy Spirit.
Increase In Brotherly Love
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:9–12
⁹ Concerning brotherly love, Paul did not need to write much to them, because they themselves were taught by God to love one another. ¹⁰ They were already showing love toward all the brethren throughout Macedonia, but Paul urged them to increase even more. ¹¹ They were to make it their aim to live quietly, mind their own matters, and work with their own hands, just as Paul had commanded them. ¹² In this way, they would walk properly toward those outside the faith and lack nothing.
🔹 The Truth
God teaches His people to love one another.
Brotherly love should continue to increase.
Believers are called to live quietly and responsibly.
God’s people should avoid needless meddling in the affairs of others.
Work is honorable before the Lord.
A faithful daily life is part of a good testimony before unbelievers.
🔹 The Promise
God teaches believers to love one another and provides wisdom for a faithful daily walk.
✅ Conclusion
The Thessalonians already loved the brethren, but Paul urged them to grow even more. Love is seen not only in words, but also in quiet, responsible, faithful living.
Do Not Grieve Without Hope
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14
¹³ Paul does not want the believers to be uninformed about those who have fallen asleep, so they would not grieve like others who have no hope. ¹⁴ Since believers believe that Jesus died and rose again, they also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
🔹 The Truth
Believers need truth concerning death and resurrection.
Christians do grieve, but not as those who have no hope.
Jesus truly died and rose again.
The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the believer’s hope.
Those who die in Christ are not forgotten or lost.
🔹 The Promise
God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
✅ Conclusion
Paul does not tell believers not to grieve. He tells them not to grieve without hope. Because Jesus died and rose again, those who belong to Him have a sure future.
The Coming Of The Lord
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:15–18
¹⁵ Paul says this by the word of the Lord: those who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not go ahead of those who have fallen asleep. ¹⁶ The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ will rise first. ¹⁷ Then those believers who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so they will always be with the Lord. ¹⁸ Therefore, believers are to comfort one another with these words.
🔹 The Truth
The coming of the Lord is certain.
The Lord Himself will descend from heaven.
The dead in Christ will rise first.
Living believers at His coming will be caught up together with them.
Believers will meet the Lord and be with Him forever.
This truth is meant to comfort God’s people.
🔹 The Promise
Believers will always be with the Lord.
✅ Conclusion
Paul ends the chapter with one of the greatest comforts for believers. Death does not have the final word. Christ is coming, the dead in Christ will rise, and all His people will be with Him forever.
Overall Conclusion
1 Thessalonians 4 teaches believers how to walk before God while waiting for the coming of Christ.
Paul first calls believers to live in a way that pleases God. This includes holiness, purity, and self-control. God’s will is sanctification, and He calls His people away from uncleanness and into holiness.
Paul then encourages them to increase in brotherly love. Love should grow, and daily life should be marked by quiet faithfulness, honest work, and a good testimony before those outside the faith.
The chapter ends with hope concerning believers who have died. Christians grieve, but not like those who have no hope. Because Jesus died and rose again, those who sleep in Christ will be raised.
