Chapter Analysis
2 Corinthians 8: Grace Giving And The Example Of Christ
The Grace Of God In The Churches Of Macedonia
📖 2 Corinthians 8:1–7
¹ Paul makes known to the Corinthians the grace of God given among the churches of Macedonia. ² In a great trial of affliction, their overflowing joy and deep poverty overflowed in rich generosity. ³ Paul testifies that they gave according to their ability, and even beyond their ability, willingly. ⁴ They begged Paul and his companions with much urgency for the privilege of sharing in the service to the saints. ⁵ They did more than Paul expected, first giving themselves to the Lord, and then to Paul and his fellow workers by the will of God. ⁶ So Paul urged Titus, who had already begun this work, to complete this grace among the Corinthians also. ⁷ Since the Corinthians abounded in everything—in faith, speech, knowledge, diligence, and love—they should also abound in this grace of giving.
🔹 The Truth
Giving is a work of God’s grace in His people.
The Macedonian believers gave generously even in affliction and poverty.
True giving is willing, not forced.
They first gave themselves to the Lord.
Believers who abound in other spiritual things should also abound in generosity.
🔹 The Promise
God’s grace can produce joyful generosity even in hardship and poverty.
✅ Conclusion
Paul begins by pointing to the churches of Macedonia. Their giving was not based on wealth or ease, but on grace, joy, willingness, and devotion to the Lord.
The Example Of Christ
📖 2 Corinthians 8:8–9
⁸ Paul does not speak this as a command, but to test the sincerity of their love by comparing it with the diligence of others. ⁹ They know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: though He was rich, yet for their sake He became poor, so that through His poverty they might become rich.
🔹 The Truth
Christian giving should flow from sincere love.
Paul appeals to grace, not pressure.
Jesus Christ is the supreme example of self-giving love.
Christ became poor for our sake.
Through Christ’s poverty, believers become spiritually rich.
🔹 The Promise
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, believers are made rich in Him.
✅ Conclusion
The greatest motivation for generosity is Christ Himself. He gave Himself for us. His grace teaches believers to give with sincere love.
Complete What You Began
📖 2 Corinthians 8:10–15
¹⁰ Paul gives his advice because it is helpful for them. The Corinthians had begun this work a year earlier, not only doing it, but also desiring to do it. ¹¹ Now they should finish what they started, so that their readiness to desire would be matched by their completion, according to what they had. ¹² If there is first a willing mind, the gift is accepted according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. ¹³ Paul does not mean that others should be eased while they are burdened, ¹⁴ but that there should be fairness. At this time, their abundance could supply the need of others, so that later the abundance of others might supply their need. In this way, there would be equality. ¹⁵ As it is written, the one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little had no lack.
🔹 The Truth
Good intentions should be brought to completion.
Giving should be according to what a person has, not what he does not have.
God values a willing heart.
Christian generosity is not meant to create unfair burden.
Believers are to care for one another’s needs.
God’s pattern is that His people share so that none are lacking.
🔹 The Promise
God accepts willing giving according to what a person has.
✅ Conclusion
Paul calls the Corinthians to finish what they began. God does not measure giving by comparison with others, but by willingness and faithfulness with what He has provided.
Titus And The Trusted Brothers
📖 2 Corinthians 8:16–24
¹⁶ Paul thanks God, who put the same earnest care for the Corinthians into the heart of Titus. ¹⁷ Titus accepted Paul’s urging, and being very eager, went to them of his own accord. ¹⁸ Paul sent with Titus the brother whose praise in the gospel was known throughout all the churches. ¹⁹ This brother was also chosen by the churches to travel with Paul and his companions with this gift, which was being administered for the glory of the Lord and to show their ready mind. ²⁰ Paul took care that no one could blame them in the handling of this generous gift. ²¹ They sought to do what was honorable, not only before the Lord, but also before men. ²² Paul sent another brother with them, one who had often proven diligent in many things and was now even more diligent because of great confidence in the Corinthians. ²³ As for Titus, he was Paul’s partner and fellow worker for the Corinthians. As for the brothers, they were messengers of the churches and the glory of Christ. ²⁴ Therefore, the Corinthians were to show them proof of their love and prove before the churches that Paul’s boasting about them was true.
🔹 The Truth
God puts earnest care for His people into the hearts of faithful servants.
Titus served willingly and eagerly.
Church giving must be handled with integrity and accountability.
Faithful servants seek what is honorable before the Lord and before people.
Trusted workers should be recognized and received rightly.
Generosity gives visible proof of love.
🔹 The Promise
God provides faithful servants to help His people carry out ministry with integrity.
✅ Conclusion
Paul was careful with the collection because money must be handled honorably. The goal was the glory of the Lord, the care of the saints, and a clear testimony before the churches.
