Colossians 1 – The Supremacy of Jesus Christ

Colossians 1

Chapter with Audio

Greeting

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Preeminence of Christ

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Paul's Ministry to the Church

24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

Faith, Love, And Hope In The Gospel

📖 Colossians 1:1–8

¹ Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, writes with Timothy our brother ² to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse. Grace and peace come from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. ³ Paul and Timothy always gave thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when praying for them, ⁴ because they had heard of their faith in Christ Jesus and their love for all the saints. ⁵ This faith and love came because of the hope laid up for them in heaven, which they had heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel. ⁶ This gospel had come to them, just as it was bringing forth fruit and increasing throughout the world, as it had also done among them since the day they heard and truly understood the grace of God. ⁷ They had learned this from Epaphras, Paul’s beloved fellow servant, who was a faithful minister of Christ on their behalf. ⁸ Epaphras had also told Paul and Timothy about their love in the Spirit.

They asked that the Colossians would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, ¹⁰ so they would walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. ¹¹ They prayed that the believers would be strengthened with all power according to God’s glorious might, for all patience and longsuffering with joy, ¹² giving thanks to the Father, who made them qualified to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. ¹³ The Father delivered them from the authority of darkness and transferred them into the kingdom of the Son of His love. ¹⁴ In Christ they have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

The Supremacy Of Christ

📖 Colossians 1:15–18

¹⁵ Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. ¹⁶ By Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. ¹⁷ He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. ¹⁸ He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything He may have first place.

Christ is supreme over all creation.

All things were created by Him, through Him, and for Him.

Reconciled Through His Blood

📖 Colossians 1:19–23

¹⁹ It pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell in Christ, ²⁰ and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. ²¹ The Colossians were once alienated and enemies in their minds because of wicked works. ²² Yet now God had reconciled them in the body of Christ’s flesh through death, to present them holy, blameless, and above reproach in His sight, ²³ if they continued in the faith, grounded and steadfast, not moved away from the hope of the gospel which they had heard. This gospel had been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and Paul had become a minister of it.

🔹 The Truth

All fullness dwells in Christ.

Peace with God was made through the blood of Christ’s cross.

Sinners are naturally alienated from God and hostile in mind.

Reconciliation comes through the death of Christ.

God’s purpose is to present believers holy, blameless, and above reproach.

Believers are called to continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast.

The hope of the gospel must not be abandoned.

🔹 The Promise

Through the blood of Christ’s cross, God reconciles believers and presents them holy in His sight.

✅ Conclusion

The cross is the place where peace was made. Those who were once alienated from God are reconciled through Christ’s death and called to remain grounded in the hope of the gospel.

Christ In You, The Hope Of Glory

📖 Colossians 1:24–29

²⁴ Paul now rejoiced in his sufferings for the Colossians, and in his body he filled up what was lacking in the afflictions of Christ for the sake of His body, which is the church. ²⁵ Paul became a minister of the church according to the stewardship God gave him, to make the word of God fully known. ²⁶ This mystery had been hidden from ages and generations, but now had been revealed to His saints. ²⁷ God willed to make known among the Gentiles the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in them, the hope of glory. ²⁸ Paul proclaimed Christ, warning every person and teaching every person in all wisdom, so that he might present every person complete in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ For this purpose Paul labored, striving according to God’s working, which worked powerfully in him.

🔹 The Truth

Paul rejoiced even in suffering for the sake of Christ’s body, the church.

God gave Paul a stewardship to make His word fully known.
