Chapter Analysis
Romans 10: Righteousness By Faith And Calling On The Lord
Israel’s Zeal Without Knowledge
📖 Romans 10:1–4
¹ Paul’s heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel was that they might be saved. ² He testified that they had zeal for God, but not according to true knowledge. ³ Because they did not understand God’s righteousness and tried to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to the righteousness of God. ⁴ Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
🔹 The Truth
Paul deeply desired Israel’s salvation.
Religious zeal is not enough if it is not according to the truth.
Israel tried to establish their own righteousness instead of submitting to God’s righteousness.
Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
🔹 The Promise
Everyone who believes in Christ receives the righteousness God provides.
✅ Conclusion
Romans 10 begins by showing that sincerity and zeal cannot save. Israel was religious, but many rejected God’s righteousness in Christ and tried to establish their own.
The Righteousness Of Faith Speaks
📖 Romans 10:5–13
⁵ Moses wrote about the righteousness that is based on the law: the person who does those things shall live by them. ⁶ But the righteousness that comes by faith does not say, “Who will ascend into heaven?” as though Christ needed to be brought down. ⁷ Nor does it say, “Who will descend into the abyss?” as though Christ needed to be brought up from the dead. ⁸ Instead, the word is near, in the mouth and in the heart. This is the word of faith Paul preached. ⁹ If a person confesses with the mouth the Lord Jesus and believes in the heart that God raised Him from the dead, he will be saved. ¹⁰ With the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. ¹¹ Scripture says that whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. ¹² There is no difference between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. ¹³ Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
🔹 The Truth
The righteousness based on law requires perfect obedience.
The righteousness of faith receives what God has done in Christ.
Salvation is not far away or impossible to reach.
A person believes in the heart and confesses Jesus as Lord.
God raised Jesus from the dead.
There is one Lord over both Jew and Gentile.
🔹 The Promise
Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
✅ Conclusion
The gospel does not tell sinners to climb up to heaven or descend into the depths to find salvation. God has brought salvation near through Christ. The sinner is called to believe in the risen Lord Jesus and call upon Him.
Faith Comes By Hearing
📖 Romans 10:14–17
¹⁴ How then shall people call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without someone preaching? ¹⁵ And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things. ¹⁶ But not all obeyed the gospel. Isaiah said, “Lord, who has believed our report?” ¹⁷ So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
🔹 The Truth
People must hear the message of Christ in order to believe.
God sends messengers to proclaim the gospel.
The gospel is good news of peace.
Not everyone who hears obeys the gospel.
Faith comes by hearing the word of God.
🔹 The Promise
God uses the preaching of His word to bring people to faith.
✅ Conclusion
Romans 10 shows the importance of proclaiming the gospel. People cannot call on Christ if they have not heard of Him. Faith comes through hearing the word of God.
Israel Heard But Did Not Obey
📖 Romans 10:18–21
¹⁸ Paul asks whether Israel had heard. Yes, their message went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. ¹⁹ Then he asks whether Israel knew. Moses said that God would provoke them to jealousy by those who were not a nation, and anger them by a foolish nation. ²⁰ Isaiah was bold and said that God was found by those who did not seek Him, and revealed Himself to those who did not ask for Him. ²¹ But concerning Israel, God said that all day long He stretched out His hands to a disobedient and contrary people.
🔹 The Truth
Israel was not without witness.
God had warned that Gentiles would receive mercy.
God revealed Himself to those who were not seeking Him.
Israel’s problem was not lack of information, but disobedience and unbelief.
God patiently stretched out His hands to a rebellious people.
🔹 The Promise
God shows mercy even to those who were not seeking Him and reveals Himself according to His grace.
✅ Conclusion
Israel heard, but many did not obey the gospel. God’s mercy reached the Gentiles, while Israel’s unbelief exposed their refusal to submit to God’s righteousness in Christ.
Overall Conclusion
Romans 10 shows that righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not through trying to establish one’s own righteousness.
Paul desired Israel’s salvation, but Israel’s zeal was not according to true knowledge. They pursued righteousness in the wrong way, because they did not submit to the righteousness of God.
The gospel brings salvation near. Whoever believes in the risen Lord Jesus and calls on His name shall be saved. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
This chapter calls believers to trust Christ alone for righteousness and to proclaim the gospel so others may hear, believe, and call on the Lord.
