The Fall of Babylon

Chapter with Audio

18 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. 2 And he called out with a mighty voice,

“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
She has become a dwelling place for demons,
a haunt for every unclean spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.
3 For all nations have drunk
the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,
and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”

4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,

“Come out of her, my people,
lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues;
5 for her sins are heaped high as heaven,
and God has remembered her iniquities.
6 Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,
    and repay her double for her deeds;
mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.
7 As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
    ‘I sit as a queen,
I am no widow,
and mourning I shall never see.’
8 For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,
    death and mourning and famine,
and she will be burned up with fire;
for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

9 And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. 10 They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,

“Alas! Alas! You great city,
    you mighty city, Babylon!
For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
    has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
    are lost to you,
    never to be found again!”

15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
that was clothed in fine linen,
        in purple and scarlet,
    adorned with gold,
        with jewels, and with pearls!
17 For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.”

And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,

“What city was like the great city?”

19 And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,

“Alas, alas, for the great city
where all who had ships at sea
    grew rich by her wealth!
For in a single hour she has been laid waste.
20 Rejoice over her, O heaven,
and you saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has given judgment for you against her!”

21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

“So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence,
    and will be found no more;
22 and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters,
will be heard in you no more,
and a craftsman of any craft
will be found in you no more,
and the sound of the mill
will be heard in you no more,
23 and the light of a lamp
will shine in you no more,
and the voice of bridegroom and bride
will be heard in you no more,
for your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints,
and of all who have been slain on earth.”

Chapter Analysis

Revelation 18: The Fall Of Babylon The Great

Babylon Has Fallen

📖 Revelation 18:1–3

¹ John saw another angel coming down from heaven with great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory.
² He cried mightily with a loud voice, saying that Babylon the great has fallen and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird.
³ All nations drank of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. The kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth became rich through the abundance of her luxury.

🔹 The Truth

Babylon appears wealthy and powerful, but spiritually she is corrupt and unclean.

Her influence reaches nations, kings, and merchants.

Worldly luxury can hide deep spiritual darkness.

🔹 The Promise

God will expose and judge every corrupt system that leads the nations away from Him.

✅ Conclusion

Babylon’s fall shows that what the world admires may be filthy and condemned before God.

Come Out Of Her, My People

📖 Revelation 18:4–8

⁴ John heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, My people, so that you do not share in her sins and do not receive her plagues.
⁵ Her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
⁶ Repay her as she has repaid others, and give her double according to her works. In the cup she mixed, mix double for her.
⁷ As much as she glorified herself and lived in luxury, give her torment and sorrow. She says in her heart that she sits as queen, is not a widow, and will not see sorrow.
⁸ Therefore her plagues will come in one day: death, mourning, and famine. She will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.

🔹 The Truth

God calls His people to separate from Babylon’s sins.

Babylon’s pride, luxury, and self-confidence cannot protect her from judgment.

God remembers her iniquities and judges her with strength.

🔹 The Promise

The Lord God who judges Babylon is strong, and His judgment cannot fail.

✅ Conclusion

God’s people must not share in Babylon’s sins. Separation from spiritual corruption is not optional.

The Kings Of The Earth Mourn

📖 Revelation 18:9–10

⁹ The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with Babylon will weep and mourn over her when they see the smoke of her burning.
¹⁰ They will stand far off because of the fear of her torment, saying, “Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.”

🔹 The Truth

The kings mourn Babylon because their power and pleasure were tied to her.

They stand far away, unable to save her.

Her judgment comes suddenly.

🔹 The Promise

No earthly ruler can stop God’s judgment when His appointed time comes.

✅ Conclusion

The kings’ sorrow is not repentance. They mourn the loss of Babylon’s glory, not the evil of her sins.

The Merchants Mourn

📖 Revelation 18:11–19

¹¹ The merchants of the earth weep and mourn over Babylon because no one buys their merchandise anymore.
¹² Their goods included gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple, silk, scarlet, fragrant woods, ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron, and marble;
¹³ cinnamon, incense, fragrant oil, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, bodies, and souls of men.
¹⁴ The fruit that her soul longed for departed from her, and all her rich and splendid things were gone and would not be found anymore.
¹⁵ The merchants who became rich by her will stand far off because of the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing.
¹⁶ They will say, “Alas, alas, that great city clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls!”
¹⁷ In one hour such great riches came to nothing. Every shipmaster, traveler, sailor, and those who trade by sea stood far off.
¹⁸ They cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, asking what city was like this great city.
¹⁹ They threw dust on their heads and cried, weeping and wailing, because in one hour she was made desolate.

🔹 The Truth

Babylon’s economy is built on luxury, greed, exploitation, and even the souls of men.

The merchants mourn because their profits disappear.

The wealth of the world can vanish in one hour.

🔹 The Promise

God will bring an end to corrupt gain, exploitation, and worldly luxury that defies Him.

✅ Conclusion

The merchants’ grief reveals the heart of Babylon: money, luxury, and trade mattered more than righteousness before God.

Heaven Rejoices Over Babylon’s Judgment

📖 Revelation 18:20–24

²⁰ Heaven, the holy apostles, and the prophets are told to rejoice over Babylon because God has avenged them on her.
²¹ A mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying Babylon would be thrown down with violence and found no more.
²² The sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, trumpeters, craftsmen, and millstones would no longer be heard in her.
²³ The light of a lamp would no longer shine in her, and the voice of bridegroom and bride would no longer be heard in her. Her merchants were the great men of the earth, and by her sorcery all nations were deceived.
²⁴ In her was found the blood of prophets, saints, and all who were slain on the earth.

🔹 The Truth

Heaven rejoices because God’s judgment is righteous.

Babylon deceived the nations and persecuted God’s people.

Her fall is final; she will be found no more.

🔹 The Promise

God will avenge the blood of His servants and bring final justice.

✅ Conclusion

Revelation 18 ends with Babylon’s complete ruin. Her music, business, lights, celebrations, and power are silenced forever under the judgment of God.

Summary Conclusion
