Philippians 2 – The Humility and Exaltation of Christ

philippians 2

Chapter with Audio

2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Lights in the World

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

Timothy and Epaphroditus

19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. 20 For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. 21 For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know Timothy's proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. 23 I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, 24 and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also.

25 I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, 26 for he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. 29 So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, 30 for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me.

Chapter Analysis

Philippians 2: The Mind Of Christ And Shining As Lights

Be Of One Mind In Humility

📖 Philippians 2:1–4

¹ Since there is encouragement in Christ, comfort from love, fellowship in the Spirit, and tender mercy, ² Paul urges the believers to make his joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love, being united in spirit, and focused on one purpose. ³ They are to do nothing from selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility count others as more important than themselves. ⁴ Each one should not look only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

🔹 The Truth

Unity among believers is rooted in Christ, love, the Spirit, and mercy.

Believers are called to have the same mind and the same love.

Selfish ambition and empty pride destroy fellowship.

Humility considers others before self.

Love looks out for the interests of others.

🔹 The Promise

God gives His people fellowship in the Spirit so they can walk together in humility and love.

✅ Conclusion

The Mind Of Christ

📖 Philippians 2:5–11

⁵ Believers are to have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus. ⁶ Though He existed in the form of God, He did not cling to His equality with God for selfish advantage. ⁷ Instead, He humbled Himself, taking the form of a servant and coming in the likeness of men. ⁸ Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. ⁹ Therefore, God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name above every name, ¹⁰ so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

🔹 The Truth

Jesus Christ is truly God.

Jesus humbled Himself and became a servant.

Jesus came in true humanity.

Jesus obeyed the Father even to death on the cross.

God highly exalted Jesus.

Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

🔹 The Promise

God has exalted Jesus Christ above all, and His Lordship will be confessed by all.

✅ Conclusion

The greatest example of humility is the Lord Jesus Christ. He humbled Himself to save sinners, and God exalted Him above every name. True humility does not dishonor Christ; it follows His own path of obedience.

Work Out What God Works In

📖 Philippians 2:12–13

¹² Therefore, Paul’s beloved brethren, as they had always obeyed, not only when Paul was present but much more while he was absent, were to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling. ¹³ For it is God who works in them, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

🔹 The Truth

Believers are called to obediently live out the salvation God has given.

The Christian life is to be taken seriously before God.

God Himself works in His people.

God works in believers both to desire and to do what pleases Him.

Obedience is not self-powered; it depends on God’s inward work.

🔹 The Promise

God works in believers both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

✅ Conclusion

Believers do not work for salvation as though they could earn it. They work out the salvation God has given because God Himself is working within them.

Shine As Lights In The World

📖 Philippians 2:14–18

¹⁴ Believers are to do all things without complaining or arguing, ¹⁵ so they may be blameless and innocent, children of God without fault in the middle of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom they shine as lights in the world. ¹⁶ They are to hold firmly to the word of life, so that Paul may rejoice in the day of Christ that he did not run or labor in vain. ¹⁷ Even if Paul was being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of their faith, he was glad and rejoiced with them all. ¹⁸ In the same way, they also should be glad and rejoice with him.

🔹 The Truth

Complaining and arguing do not reflect the character of Christ.

God calls His children to live blamelessly in a crooked generation.

Believers are to shine as lights in the world.

The word of life must be held firmly.

Faithful service may involve sacrifice.

Believers can rejoice together even in suffering.

🔹 The Promise

God makes His children lights in a dark world as they hold firmly to the word of life.

✅ Conclusion

The life of a believer should be different from the world. Instead of grumbling and conflict, God’s people are to hold fast to His word and shine with the light of Christ.

Timothy’s Faithful Care

📖 Philippians 2:19–24

¹⁹ Paul hoped in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to the Philippians soon, so that Paul also might be encouraged when he heard about their condition. ²⁰ Paul had no one like Timothy, who would sincerely care for their welfare. ²¹ Others sought their own interests, not the things of Christ Jesus. ²² But the Philippians knew Timothy’s proven character, that as a son with a father he had served with Paul in the gospel. ²³ Paul hoped to send him as soon as he saw how things would go with him. ²⁴ And Paul trusted in the Lord that he himself would also come soon.

🔹 The Truth

Paul cared deeply about the spiritual condition of the Philippians.

Timothy had sincere concern for the welfare of believers.

Many seek their own interests rather than the things of Christ.

Timothy’s character had been proven through faithful service.

Gospel ministry involves trusted servants working together.

Paul made plans while trusting in the Lord.

🔹 The Promise

God raises up faithful servants who genuinely care for the good of His people.

✅ Conclusion

Timothy was an example of Christlike concern. He did not merely serve publicly; he sincerely cared for the souls and welfare of God’s people.

Epaphroditus, A Faithful Brother And Fellow Worker

📖 Philippians 2:25–30

²⁵ Paul thought it necessary to send Epaphroditus back to the Philippians. He was Paul’s brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, messenger from the Philippians, and the one who ministered to Paul’s need. ²⁶ Epaphroditus longed for them all and was distressed because they had heard he was sick. ²⁷ He truly had been sick, near death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but also on Paul, so that Paul would not have sorrow upon sorrow. ²⁸ Therefore, Paul sent him more eagerly, so that when the Philippians saw him again they would rejoice, and Paul would have less sorrow. ²⁹ They were to receive him in the Lord with all gladness and hold such men in honor. ³⁰ Because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to complete what was lacking in their service toward Paul.

🔹 The Truth

Epaphroditus served as a brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier.

He ministered to Paul on behalf of the Philippians.

Faithful service can involve real danger, sickness, and sacrifice.

God showed mercy by sparing Epaphroditus.

Faithful servants should be received with gladness and honored.

The work of Christ is worthy of costly service.

🔹 The Promise

God shows mercy to His servants and uses their sacrifice to bless His people.

✅ Conclusion

Epaphroditus is an example of faithful, sacrificial service. He risked his life for the work of Christ, and Paul told the church to receive him with joy and honor.

Overall Conclusion

Philippians 2 calls believers to have the mind of Christ.

Paul begins by urging unity, humility, and selfless love. Believers are not to be driven by selfish ambition or pride, but are to consider others and care for their interests.
