Philippians 3 – Pressing Toward the Heavenly Goal

philippians 3

Chapter with Audio

3 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.

2 Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— 4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Straining Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. 18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Chapter Analysis

Philippians 3: Knowing Christ And Pressing Toward The Goal

Rejoice In The Lord And Beware Of False Confidence

📖 Philippians 3:1–3

¹ Finally, Paul tells the believers to rejoice in the Lord. Writing the same things again was not troublesome to him, and it was safe for them. ² They were to beware of the dogs, beware of evil workers, and beware of those who promoted cutting the flesh. ³ For believers are the true circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.

🔹 The Truth

Believers are called to rejoice in the Lord.

Repeated warnings are sometimes necessary for spiritual safety.

False teachers can appear religious but still lead people away from Christ.

True worship is by the Spirit of God.

Believers rejoice in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.

🔹 The Promise

God gives His people true worship by the Spirit and true confidence in Christ Jesus.

✅ Conclusion

Paul begins with joy in the Lord and a serious warning. Religious confidence in the flesh cannot save. True believers worship by the Spirit, boast in Christ, and do not trust in human works or outward religious identity.

Paul’s Former Confidence In The Flesh

📖 Philippians 3:4–6

⁴ Paul says that if anyone could have confidence in the flesh, he had more reason than most. ⁵ He was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. Concerning the law, he was a Pharisee. ⁶ Concerning zeal, he persecuted the church. Concerning the righteousness found in the law, he appeared blameless.

🔹 The Truth

Paul had strong religious credentials according to the flesh.

He had national, tribal, religious, and moral reasons for human boasting.

Paul had been zealous, but his zeal had been wrongly directed.

Outward religious achievement cannot make a sinner right with God.

Even strict law-keeping cannot give true righteousness before God.

🔹 The Promise

God can rescue even those who once trusted in religion, works, and human achievement.

✅ Conclusion

Paul knew what it meant to trust in religious identity and personal achievement. But all of it failed to give him the righteousness he truly needed before God.

Count Everything Loss For Christ

📖 Philippians 3:7–11

⁷ Whatever things had once been gain to Paul, he now counted as loss because of Christ. ⁸ More than that, he counted all things as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord. For Christ’s sake, Paul had suffered the loss of all things and counted them as rubbish, so that he might gain Christ ⁹ and be found in Him, not having his own righteousness from the law, but the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God by faith. ¹⁰ Paul’s desire was to know Christ, the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, ¹¹ so that by any means he might attain to the resurrection from the dead.

🔹 The Truth

Christ is worth more than every earthly or religious advantage.

Paul counted all former gain as loss compared with knowing Christ.

True righteousness does not come from the law.

The righteousness believers need comes from God through faith in Christ.

Knowing Christ includes resurrection power and fellowship in His sufferings.

Believers are called to be conformed to Christ.

🔹 The Promise

God gives righteousness through faith in Christ to those who are found in Him.

✅ Conclusion

Paul’s greatest desire was not religion, status, or self-righteousness. His desire was Christ Himself. To gain Christ and be found in Him was greater than everything Paul once valued.

Press Toward The Goal

📖 Philippians 3:12–16

¹² Paul had not already obtained everything or already been made complete, but he pressed on to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus had laid hold of him. ¹³ Brethren, Paul did not consider himself to have already taken hold of it. But one thing he did: forgetting what was behind and reaching forward to what was ahead, ¹⁴ he pressed toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Therefore, as many as are mature should think this way; and if they thought differently about anything, God would reveal even this to them. ¹⁶ Nevertheless, they were to walk according to the truth they had already received.

🔹 The Truth

Paul did not claim that he had already reached full maturity.

The Christian life is a life of pressing forward in Christ.

Believers must not live trapped by what is behind them.

The goal is the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Spiritual maturity includes humble pursuit, not self-satisfaction.

Believers are responsible to walk in the truth they already have.

🔹 The Promise

Christ Jesus has laid hold of believers, and God calls them upward in Him.

✅ Conclusion

Paul pressed forward because Christ had already taken hold of him. The believer’s life is not drifting backward, but reaching forward toward the goal God has set in Christ.

Follow Godly Examples

📖 Philippians 3:17–19

¹⁷ Paul urged the brethren to follow his example and to observe those who walked according to the pattern they had in him and his fellow workers. ¹⁸ Many walked as enemies of the cross of Christ, and Paul had often told them about such people, now even with tears. ¹⁹ Their end is destruction, their god is their appetite, their glory is in their shame, and their mind is set on earthly things.

🔹 The Truth

Believers need godly examples to follow.

A faithful pattern of life matters.

Some who claim spiritual influence actually live as enemies of the cross of Christ.

Paul warned about such people with tears.

A life ruled by fleshly desire and earthly thinking leads to destruction.

Believers must not glory in what is shameful.

🔹 The Promise

God provides faithful examples to help His people walk in the truth.

✅ Conclusion

Paul warns the believers not to follow those whose lives contradict the cross of Christ. Godly examples help believers see what faithful living looks like.

Our Citizenship Is In Heaven

📖 Philippians 3:20–21

²⁰ The believer’s citizenship is in heaven, from which they eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. ²¹ He will transform their lowly body to be like His glorious body, according to the power by which He is able to bring all things under His authority.

🔹 The Truth

Believers belong to heaven.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Savior believers eagerly await.

The present body is lowly and weak.

Christ will transform the believer’s body to be like His glorious body.

Jesus has power to bring all things under His authority.

🔹 The Promise

The Lord Jesus Christ will transform the believer’s lowly body to be like His glorious body.

✅ Conclusion

Paul ends the chapter with heavenly hope. Believers are not defined by this world. Their citizenship is in heaven, and their Savior is coming to transform them in glory.

Overall Conclusion

Philippians 3 calls believers away from confidence in the flesh and into full confidence in Christ.

Paul had every reason to boast according to human religion, heritage, zeal, and law-keeping. Yet he counted it all as loss compared with the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.

True righteousness does not come through the law, human effort, or religious achievement. It comes from God through faith in Christ.

Paul’s desire was to know Christ, the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings. He did not claim to have arrived, but pressed forward toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

The chapter ends by reminding believers that their citizenship is in heaven. The Lord Jesus Christ will return and transform their lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.
